EHS National Honor Society’s Adopt-a-Family Program Returns for Holiday Season

Elmira High School National Honor Society is bringing back the annual Adopt-a-Family program for the 2024 holiday season. Fourth period classes will compete against each other to donate the most to their designated family, with the class that donates the most receiving a prize.

The Adopt-A-Family program takes place across Lane County every year in various school districts. Families apply to a committee who decides which applicants the school will support. The program helps lower-class families faced with financial struggles who are unable to support buying gifts for relatives on Christmas.

“People should donate to the program because it helps families in need,” National Honor Society member Gabriel Galaviz said.

Information for the assigned individual will be given to each fourth period class. Details such as their favorite color, clothing size, hobbies, and wish list will be provided. Students are encouraged to purchase items from the provided wish list to bring to their class to be wrapped and given to the family. Cash or checks (made out to EHS) can also be donated, and NHS will purchase items they see fit to gift to the individual.

Representatives from NHS will be visiting classes on Tuesday to announce more details, as well as each class’ family. Fundraising will go until Dec. 12, with the gifts being delivered on the Friday before winter break.

Coinciding with the beginning of the Adopt-a-Family program, candy-gram sales will also commence. Students will be able to purchase a candy-gram that includes a candy cane and a hand-written note to be delivered to any student or staff member in the school.
