West Eugene Boxing gym is one of the few boxing gyms in the Eugene-Springfield area.
There are two coaches at West Eugene Boxing; main coach Myron Johnson and other coach Enrico Cervantez.
West Eugene Boxing Club offers Monday-Thursday classes from 6-8 p.m. The gym is located at the Applegate Theater at 87230 Central Rd, Eugene, OR 97402.
They both have reliable coaching backgrounds in boxing. Coach Johnson shares his achievements in boxing with Falcon News.
“I was a bronze medalist in the Junior Olympics ’75. In ’76 I qualified for the Olympic Trials. ’80 alternate for ’80 boxing team that was boycotted. I was a national coach. I took over as a coach in ’87 and have been on the US team numerous times,” Johnson said.
Coach Cervantez trained at the famous King’s Boxing Gym and would spar with pros and trained by former professional boxers.
They accept boxers of all ages; their youngest boxer is 9 years old.
West Eugene Boxing has 3 active amateur boxers in the gym right now.
Coach Johnson has a history in training boxers as he shares success stories of boxers that he has trained himself.
“I trained Two national champions, two people the placed second in the nation, one that placed seven, one that placed eight and I’ve had one be on the US team,” he said.
Coach Johnson believes boxing helps you not just physically but morally in life and a coach should have a larger role in a dedicated boxer’s life.
“Boxing, it offers opportunity for growth and experience, discipline, respect and overall skills for life,” Coach Johnson stated.
Johnson voiced his views on coaching and that you are not just a coach to them.
“You’re not only a coach, you’re a teacher, a mentor, basically a father figure, mother figure. Preparing them to compete is basically their calisthenics skill work and just preparedness just like any other sport is basically that person that’s gonna be basically a guide to boxers,” he stated.
The boxing gym is a very welcoming place with very close bonds Coach Johnson claims.
“We have always been basically family oriented around here. You walk in here you are like a family at the same time if you want to be successful you will and if you want to work hard to succeed in whatever you do we are here to help facilitate whatever you do.”
The skills taught in the boxing gym are taught to be used only inside the boxing gym.
“Boxing is a sport, it’s not meant to make a kid violent, arrogant or egotistical. It’s supposed to be a vent for some children and give them an opportunity to learn about themselves and become something better in life.” Coach Cervantez tells Falcon News.
People starting in boxing probably won’t have equipment so the boxing club provides equipment from handwraps to sparring gear to borrow from the gym.
