The National Honor Society “empowers and equips your students with the knowledge and skills to be transformative leaders in your school, community, and beyond,” according to its website.
Dr. Edward Rynearson, with the help of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, created the National Honor Society on March 1, 1921. NHS was created based on four pillars: service, scholarship, character and leadership.
The EHS National Honor Society is working on its Red Cross blood drive, which will be held Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym.
The Elmira NHS also runs a candy-gram fundraiser during Valentine’s Day and winter holidays, in which for $1 students can send a message and candy to recipients of their choice.
NHS’ other program is the Adopt-a-Family campaign, in which people collaborate to buy Christmas presents for families in need.
All members of NHS are required to complete at least 40 hours of community service and must have a 3.5 GPA to be eligible to join.
The National Honor Society meets weekly on Wednesdays in Room 26 and is run by EHS English teacher Michelle Nelson.
The 2023-24 officers are seniors Iris Frome as president, Lillian Ossowski as vice president, Alicia Murdock as secretary and Mari Espinoza as treasurer.
