Elmira High School junior Brett Highburger placed first over the weekend at the OSAA Wrestling State Championships in Portland.
EHS also had four other state placers: senior Will Walton (2nd), senior Kat Jentzsch (4th), junior Colton Barklow (4th) and senior Wayde Walton (6th).
Elmira wrestling finished seventh overall as a team in their division of the boys state tournament.
Highburger said he felt good about his championship match, which was his fourth of the tournament.
“It felt good,” he said. “I pinned him in the second round.”
For winning the state title, Highburger received the bracket for his weight class, the coin from the coin toss, and a medal.
Will Walton said he wasn’t too happy with his second-place finish.
“I’d say I’m the best wrestler in Oregon,” he said. “It was a very winnable match that I only lost by four points.
“Basically, I had a spicy cold pork sandwich, which was a major defect in my performance due to stomach problems that cost me the title. That’s the best excuse I got.”
