Last week the EHS Basketball Program’s season began with two home games. The first was against Sweet Home on Wednesday and the second against Stayton on Friday.
The Sweet Home game resulted in wins for every team, except for the boys varsity. The girls JV2 game was canceled due to a lack of players.
The boys JV2 won 24 to 12 and the boys JV won with 33 points to 29. Although the boys varsity team didn’t win, they put up a tough fight.
It looked like they had the win in the bag until the last second when Sweet Home stole a winning basket just as the buzzer went off. The game ended with a close score of 31-33.
The score leaders were #33, senior forward Jacob Janeczko with 11 points and #2, senior wing Braiden Hansen with 15 points.
The JV girls team won their game with 39 points to 16. The varsity girls team garnered a win for EHS with a close match that ended in 28-25.
Sweet Home held the lead by 8 points until after halftime when the Falcons came back and took control of the court.
The score leaders for the night were #2, sophomore point guard Layla Burgess with 9 points and #33, junior guard Iris Frome with 7 points.
“You know, when compared to the season we had last year, and the improvement we had over the year, I’m so proud of these girls. It was a great team win,” girls varsity head coach Jeff Green said.
The Stayton games had a much more unfortunate outcome when compared to the success of the Sweet Home games.
The boys JV2 lost 28-46 and the boys JV lost 23-56.
The boys varsity game left the team with another loss. The final score was 23-67 in the match up.
The leaders in scoring were #2, Hansen, with 11 points and #1, junior guard Austyn Woolcott with 4 points.
The girls JV lost 14-36 and there was not a JV2 game for the girls, as Stayton doesn’t have a JV2 girls team.
The girls varsity team lost 28-38, despite a tough fight from the Falcons.
The leading scorers were Burgess and #10 freshman guard Ava Greene. Both athletes scored 11 points for their team.
Luckily for the Falcons, both games were non-league events. The first league game and next home game for the EHS basketball program will be on Jan. 3 against Sisters.
