Elmira High School seniors Lucy Mitchem and Andrew Johnson have been recognized by the College Board as National Merit Commended Students.
The honor recognizes them for scoring among the top 50,000 students out of the millions of students who took the PSAT last fall.
“I’m very proud of the kids,” Principal Rick Gardner said. “I’m glad some of the students got the National Merit Commended Students award. I think it’s a great accomplishment, and I’m very excited to see how far they go in life.”
Mitchem and Johnson said they were excited about the honor.
“I guess I was kinda surprised,” Mitchem said. “I didn’t expect to get it, but I worked really hard for it. I was surprised and happy.”
“I expected something,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what I was expecting, though. I don’t know, the PSAT wasn’t very hard. I hope to do better on the real SAT.”
Congratulations to Andrew and Lucy for their academic accomplishments!
