On May 18, EHS Leadership, National Honor Society and the sports program teamed up to put on an awards assembly for the student body.
The event opened with an introduction by ASB President Clyde Oglesby, who gave a short explanation of the purpose of the assembly, welcoming students to the gathering. He then quickly turned the mic over to NHS faculty adviser Krin Hunt.
Hunt gave a quick spiel before introducing the NHS club president and vice president, McKenzie Arviso and Gracie Storey. The pair introduced current members as well as next year’s new members, who will be officially inducted during a banquet on June 2.
Current and future members of NHS were presented with a paper lei, all of which had been artfully crafted by volunteers the day before. The leis were made of white paper links, inscribed with the text “NHS” and “National Honor Society” in black ink.
The full list of students named as members of the club included: Mckenzie Arviso, Hayden Coone, James Evans, Lillian Johnson, Natalie Lottermoser, Quinn Metzger, Clyde Oglesby, Blaise Pierson, William Storey, Ethan Timpe, Zola Walker, Bayden Wanaisie, Mackenzie Wisner, Cosette Fowler, Hunter Stockinger, Brody Bothel, Tayler Carney, Bailey Cedarleaf, Cody Eutsler, Veronica Hanson, Alyssa Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Rachel Matthews, Allyssa Mini, Lucy Mitchem, Gracie Storey, Kelly Torres, Alivia Tupper, Ashlyn Turnbo, Antonio Turtura, Piper Wolgamott, Mackenzie Corbett, Karis Price, Carla Coronado-Valle, Kailie Cobb, Scarlett Walter, Caylee Farrar, Lillian Ossowski, Iris Frome, Jaquilynne Kirk, Alicia Murdock, Macaira Smith, Maritza Espinoza and Kara Catmull.
After NHS concluded its portion of the assembly, Assistant Principal Ricci Huling announced attendance awards. She presented certificates of recognition for school attendance to multiple students from each grade.
Then, teacher Sarah Wartenbee listed off all the student athletes who were recognized for exceptional performance in each sport throughout the year. For the track and field athletes, coach Patrick Wondra recognized the athletes going to the statewide track and field meet, including Gavyn Laing, Isaiah Wilson, Desmond Wilson, Tanner Hunt, Bayden Wanaisie, Alyssa Johnson, Iris Frome, Ashlyn Turnbo and Nio Turtura.
Concluding the assembly, Oglesby announced that it would be extended for an extra few minutes, which was met with cheers from the student body. The extended time was taken up by a dodgeball obstacle course run, with one competitor from each class and Huling competing. Sophomore Grey Stirling won the competition, being the first to cross the finish line, followed closely by senior Gavyn Laing in second, junior Isaiah Wilson in third and ninth-grader Lilly Turner in fourth.
