As the winter wrestling season comes to a close, Elmira High School will send nine wrestlers on the boys team to state.
Colton Barklow, Enrico Cervantez, Ian Drago, Seth Drago, Ruben Fox, Brett Highburger, Wayde Walton, William Walton and Luke Wolgamott qualified for state. None of the wrestlers on the girls team qualified.
The EHS wrestlers will compete Saturday at Cascade High School in Turner for the 4A championship.
Other championships will be held at Sandy High School (6A), Ridgeview High School (5A), LaPine High School (3A) and Culver High School (2A, 1A and girls).
The OSAA announced that it will not be holding championships at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland for the first time since 2007 because of its vaccine requirements and other COVID-19 protocols.
According to The Oregonian, “The revised format was officially implemented after individual schools hosted separate tournaments during the pandemic back in 2021.”
The OSAA has found it too difficult to verify that everyone has their vaccines, and the guest count is too high for it to be held together. With a year of experience and the ongoing pandemic, organizers and the OSAA decided against returning to Memorial Coliseum.
