Winter sports for Elmira High School kick off this week, with the first basketball games on Wednesday and the first wrestling meet on Saturday.
Last year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the winter sports seasons were held in the spring. This year, the schedules are back to normal.
The action will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when the EHS varsity girls basketball team, coached by Jeff Greene, plays at Sweet Home. The JV boys team, coached by Cody Brock, also will play at that time. The varsity boys basketball team, under head coach Trevor Daniels, is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sweet Home. The JV girls also will play at the time, coached by Rich Jones.
The basketball teams have been warming up with open gyms the past few weeks.
Last year, the girls basketball team was pushed into a quick season, with most players ninth-graders playing on a varsity team after not playing for two years.
Jones, who coached at EHS a few years ago, said he is ready to coach the girls team again. He coached most of the now-ninth-graders when they were in sixth and seventh grade, so the team is familiar to him.
The teams are looking to start the season strong, running solid plays and getting into shape.
The girls and boys wrestling teams will compete in a meet on Saturday at Cascade.
“I am ready for wrestling to finally start back up again,’’ wrestling head coach Justin Peeler said.
Sports schedules can be found under the Athletics section on the Elmira High School website. The basketball season will wrap up Feb. 18, and the last wrestling match is scheduled for Jan. 26.
