Friday was a big night for Elmira High School’s football team. The Falcons faced off against the Phoenix Pirates and scored their first win of the season, 36-30.

The 7 p.m. kickoff was the first kickoff at home where all spectators were welcome since 2019 and the second of the pre-season. The stands were filled with enthusiastic students and other fans in their blackout apparel.

The football players could feel the energy during the warm up and prepared to pull out a win. Concessions were up and running for the first time in a long time. It was the most normal home football game that the Falcons have had in two years.

The Falcons pulled out an amazing win, outscoring the Pirates 36-30.

The Falcons started off really strong four minutes into the game when Dylan Wigham scored the first touchdown of the night. Wigham continued his great night, having 160 yards rushing. Seth Drago had 145 yards rushing.

”We had lots of ups and downs,” head coach Justin Peeler said. “Cleaning up mistakes; we had a lot tonight and need to work on that.”

He thought the boys played well and wants to work on fixing the mistakes in the practices to come. The coach said he enjoyed the fans being back, too.

This Friday, the Falcons will have their last preseason game against North Valley at North Valley. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
