Season Gets Underway for Elmira Baseball, Softball Teams

The Elmira High School baseball and softball seasons are underway.

The softball team’s goal for the early season is to improve every game going forward and to learn something new each game, according to the captains.

The baseball traveled to Dayton on Monday to face the Pirates in a double-header, and the softball team hosted the Santiam Christian Eagles on Wednesday. Baseball lost the first game 1-12 against Dayton but fought hard in the second game, coming up just short with an 11-12 loss. Softball fought hard but also came up short to Santiam Christian with an 11-12 loss.

“I was very impressed overall with our first game at home,” softball coach Paul Witt said. “Yes, I want to win every game, but the first game with a young team I have to sit back and watch and listen more, measuring out the good and bad stuff.”

Senior captain Veronica Hanson said: “I feel as though we played a good game even though we lost, and I know we can learn as a team from the mistakes we made during the game.”

The softball team was scheduled to play at La Pine this Tuesday to face the Hawks, but that game was cancelled due to the weather. On Friday, they will host the Hawks at home for a double-header at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
