Elmira High School health teacher and football coach Bo Highburger recently took on a new job: being a dad.

Highburger and his wife, Eleanor, who is a teacher in the Philomath district, welcomed baby daughter Leona Lee in late December.

After his wife stayed home for three months to care for their baby, Highburger now is on paternity leave through the end of the school year. Tessa Slager, who formerly was the school’s librarian, will be the substitute for his classes.

Highburger told Falcon News that getting enough sleep has been one of the biggest challenges of being a new dad.

“It feels sleepy a little bit, but it feels amazing,” he said.

Highburger said he felt reasonably ready to become a father but admits he was not fully prepared.

“I think I was not prepared for just how much work goes in, especially when they are newborns,” he said.

Highburger plans to return just in time for football summer camp.
